This beautiful property and its stables were built in the late 1890s.Nestling in the midst of over 120 acres of woodland and pasture and surrounded by farmland, in 1915 this property was found to be ideally located to serve as a camp office for the family’s bi-annual cattle fair. The property owner's son and heir, Rai Saheb Ch. Yash Pal Singh celebrated the silver jubilee of the Jarar Mela and extensively extended this property. A man of great vision, under him the Jarar Mela reached its peak with traders and merchandise coming from as far afield as Western Punjab, Gujarat, Bengal and Karnataka and the revenue exceeding all other cattle fairs of the area. For over 85 years the male members of the family would descend upon Jarar for a period of 15 days in March for the larger of the cattle fairs. This property would serve as the residence of head of the family whilst the junior members would each have their swiss camp set up encircling the Kothi. A motley crew of over 300 people toiled (and partied!) to make the event a grand success, including 30 people who worked in shifts to run the fancy Italian generator that had its own set of rooms! The clockwork precision, guarantee of safety, amenities (including an office responsible for distributing earthen pots and sweets!), entertainment, talent shows, shops, and the revenue generated were a source of great pride and prestige for the family. However, by the 1990s the income from the fair had dwindled to the point of being unviable. The Eco-lodge In 2001 Rai Saheb Suraj Pal Singh’s great grandson, birding enthusiast and conservationist Ram Pratap Singh, gave thisproperty a new lease of life when he and his wife decided to turn their inheritance into an eco-lodge. After decades of neglect, this property was meticulously restored and rechristened.Set within 35 sprawling acres of the original heritage plantation, surrounded by the family’s farmland, the Lodge is an oasis of calm and tranquillity. The Accommodation The accommodation combines the warmth of local homes with the comfort of modern amenities. Every effort has been made to make this lodge as eco-friendly and sympathetic to its surroundings as possible. The property is split in separate cottage blocks within the woodland surrounding the main house. Each cottage has a sit-out/ verandah opening onto the farms or the woodland. The main house has two large and luxurious guest bedrooms. The restored stable block houses two small and cosy bedrooms. Meals The Lodge kitchens serve authentic ‘home cooked’ buffet meals with fresh organically grown ingredients. All meals are served in the garden or buildings of the main house. The evening bonfires provide a good opportunity to interact with other guests or simply sit back and do a spot of star-gazing. Tea and coffee is available in the main garden throughout the day and guests are welcome to make their own cuppa as often as they wish. Mineral water is complimentary and available upon request. Library and sitting room Guests are welcome to use the library, sitting room and seating areas/verandahs of the main house. We encourage all our guests to treat the Chambal Safari Lodge as their ‘home away from home’ and endeavour to provide a warm, friendly and welcoming environment where we hope you will arrive as guests and leave as friends. Indoor/outdoor games There are several board games available to guests in the library. We have a cricket set which is put to good use throughout the season – we require very little inducement to indulge in a game of fairly competitive cricket! Resident Naturalists & Checklists Our resident naturalists are available to guide morning and evening rambles through the lodge grounds and surrounding countryside. We provide detailed checklists to all our guests and the naturalists will be on hand to help you ‘tick’ off the many species you will see at the lodge and elsewhere in the Chambal valley. Bicycles The countryside around the Lodge is ideal for cycling. Our local bicycles are straight out of a period film - the old fashioned variety with upright handle bars and somewhat uncomfortable seats! The ride and countryside are however nothing if not interesting and well worth the effort. Horse Trails The Chambal Valley is famed for the number of horses that are bred and sold at the numerous animal fairs of the area, most notably the annual animal fair at Bateshwar. The local populace takes pride in its equestrian traditions and are ever eager to display their skill. The Chambal Safari arranges short 3-4 hour horse riding tours through the Chambal ravines and countryside.

Things to do: EXCURSIONS The Lodge team takes pride in providing personal attention to all their guests, allowing you to explore at your own pace. While staying here you can do as much or as little as you like. You could take a relaxing cruise on the nearby river, explore 101 river side Shiva temples, go for a walk through the family’s ancestral village and farms, spot the famous Sarus cranes that can be found just a short drive from the Lodge. Alternatively you can just relax and enjoy over 195 species of birds and mammals that can be found within the extensive grounds of the Lodge. Evening Nature Walks with the resident naturalists are the best time to go looking for Palm Civet Cats, Jungle Cats, Foxes, Jungle Hares, Fruit Bats, Hedgehogs and the Indian Striped Hyenas. River Safari - Wildlife spotting by boat on the Chambal River (30 mins drive from the Lodge) The Chambal River banks are the ideal habitat for numerous migratory and resident birds. One can easily spot colonies of the rare Indian Skimmer, Greater Thick-knee, Comb ducks, Brahmani ducks, Bar-headed geese, Spoonbills, Herons, Kingfishers, Bonelli’s eagles, Flamingoes, Pelicans, Cormorants, Ospreys and Partridges. As you travel by small motorboats on the calm and placid Chambal waters, you will also spot Marsh Crocodiles, numerous Gharials (long snout-nosed fish eating crocodiles), turtles, and if particularly patient and lucky the very rare Gangetic fresh water Dolphins. Trained naturalists are on hand to help locate and identify the numerous species. The River Safari is a unique experience, quite unlike any other game safari in Northern/Central India. The untamed ravines, the abundant wildlife, the gently sloping fields and the sheer sense of solitude all combine to make this a very special experience. Visit to Bateshwar Temples on the River Yamuna The medieval temple complex at Bateshwar on the river Yamuna, 10 kms from the Chambal Safari Lodge, consists of more than a hundred temples dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. Bateshwar provides a rare and authentic glimpse into the heart of rural India. The Chambal Safari Lodge organises escorted walks and boat rides taking in the Ghats, Temples, Caves and Markets at Bateshwar, as well as special trips during the course of the annual Animal Fair (in Oct/Nov).This ancient fair coincides with the most auspicious period for praying at Bateshwar and is an important fixture for saints, sadhus (hindu ascetics), tradesmen and villagers. The Bateshwar Fair progresses over a three week period starting with the trading of animals. Over the next 10 days, the first off the block are the Bullocks, Buffaloes and Cows, followed by the Horses and Camels and ending with the Donkeys and Goats - something for every pocket! After a lull of about 4-5 days, the religious fair starts. Vast numbers of shops offering an amazing multitude of goods stretch as far out as the eye can see and beyond. The various religious sects and their attendant Sadhus too set up camp. Families dressed in their colourful best visit for the obligatory dip in the river, prayers at the temples, blessings of the holy-men and a spot of good old shopping therapy! Camel Safari through the ravines to the ruins of Fort Ater The Chambal Ravines (altitude 200-500m) are the product of centuries of soil erosion by flood and rain waters. They form an incredible maze of intertwining mud cliffs that have been inhabited since time immemorial. Camels have been the traditional means for ferrying men and materials across this terrain. The Chambal Safari Lodge organises Camel Safaris through the ravines up to the magnificent ruins of the abandoned medieval stronghold of Fort Ater. Explore this desolate fort and climb its ramparts for some breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. You may also walk the 3 km distance between the Chambal Safari Base Camp and Fort Ater. Jeep Safari through the Chambal Ravines This tour by Jeep will give you the opportunity to explore the more remote and inaccessible parts of the beautiful Chambal Valley. Your driver and accompanying escort will take you through the ravines of the Chambal and Yamuna rivers where many a small hamlet and ancient ruin may be found. The wildlife on these drives can include the majestic Blackbuck deer, Jungle Cats, Hyenas, Wolves, Foxes and Jackals. Village Walks & Nature Walks Short walks from the Chambal Safari Lodge are an opportunity to explore an entirely different world. The owner’s ancestral village is an interesting mix of the old and the new. You will find all manner of craftsmen practicing their trade as they have done for centuries, as well as shops selling the very latest, albeit pirated, Movie DVDs. The locals are friendly and completely untouched by tourism, and take great pride in showing you around. THE CHAMBAL CONSERVATION FOUNDATION The Chambal Conservation Foundation was established in 1999, by Kunwar Ram Pratap Singh, an engineer from IIT Roorkee, and his wife Anu Dhillon Singh, an environmental scientist from London University. The main objective was to bring sustainable development initiatives to the long neglected Chambal Valley and the National Chambal Sanctuary (NCS). The Chambal Safari, an eco-tourism venture, is one such initiative, which has helped place the Chambal Valley on the birding map of Northern India, and brought recognition for its unique habitat and environs. The Foundation does not solicit funds from any individual or agency and uses part of the proceeds from the Chambal Safari to fund its activities. These include awareness campaigns, conservation projects, patrolling and anti-poaching operations, reforestation drives, check-dams, as well as sourcing expertise to create sustainable and self-sustaining projects, that lead to an improvement in the lives of the local populace, whilst building support for the natural beauty and resources of the valley.
